E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism

Nick Mabey co-founded E3G - Third Generation Environmentalism - with Tom Burke and John Ashton in 2004.

Nick became CEO in 2006 and has grown E3G to be one of the most influential global environmental think tanks. E3G has over 120 staff in offices in Brussels, Berlin, London and Washington DC and a global presence through a network of associates and partners.

E3G was founded on the proposition that if we don’t solve the political dilemma of sustainable development we risk unravelling post-war progress on democracy, development, human rights and peace. The result would be a world where raw power successfully pushes back against the rule of law.

E3G’s mission is to deliver safe climate for all.

E3G was initially established as a European organisation because Europe is the pathfinder for global sustainable development. Not because Europe is uniquely enlightened, but because Europe learnt the hard lessons from bloody conflict on the need to put limits on power and gain the benefits of pooling sovereignty. E3G now works globally to deliver its mission.

E3G’s activities focus on: analysing the politcal economy of climate change; developing politcal strategies for climate action; building multistakeholder coalitions for rapid change; and, thought leadership in institutional reform for sustainability.
